How to Plant Love in a Puff
When to Plant Love in a Puff Seeds
Love in a Puff is very sensitive to cold and ideally should be started indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost. Direct sow seeds in the Spring when soil temperatures reach a consistent 60°F. In milder climates (Zones 8 and higher) fall planting is an option as well.
Where to Plant Love in a Puff Seeds
Choose well-draining soil in Full Sun conditions for Love in a Puff seeds, though they can also tolerate Partial Shade. These varieties are also a great choice when planting for borders, or to fill in bare spots in the garden.
How to Plant Love in a Puff Seeds
Indoor sowing: The seeds benefit from scarification, this can be achieved by nicking the seed coat with a file before sowing. Sow seeds ½ inch deep in trays and keep soil evenly moist with temperatures between 65-70 degrees. Set outside after all danger of frost has passed. Outdoor sowing: After all danger of frost has passed, nick the seed coat with a file and sow ½ inch deep in prepared beds. Keep soil consistently moist as Love in a Puff is a heavy drinker. Germination will occur in 7-20 days.
How to Care for Love in a Puff
Once established, Love in a Puff requires little care. Even deadheading isn't a necessity as the seedpods have aesthetic qualities and are part of the plants' charm. They are prolific reseeders though, so if you wish to prevent the spread of seeds, you can certainly deadhead once flowers fade.

Love this delicate vine
I planted these seeds a few years ago and loved the delicate leaves on the vine, and the green paper lantern puffs are such a delight! Add to a bouquet of freshly cut flowers for the perfect finishing touch (look great with zinnias and dahlias). And for an added bonus, the puffs actually will self seed and you'll have pretty little volunteers around next year!
