Hosta plants are classic garden favorite

Hosta, the queen of shade plants, provides rich foliage with little upkeep, making it a benevolent garden ruler. If properly cared for, these beauties, sometimes known as plantain lilies, may survive for 30 years or more! Hostas are a part of the Asparagaceae family and are native to Asia. They're thought to be a sign of loyalty and friendship. How to plant and care for hostas

These delectable plants may be started in either the spring or the fall. Hostas like partial to full shade and need to be protected from the scorching summer heat. They prefer wet, well-draining soil with plenty of compost and temperatures between 60 and 75°F. Plant your hostas with the eye slightly below the soil level and the roots pointing downward. Depending on the kind, the spacing will vary.

In the spring to mid-summer, water hostas regularly and fertilize until approximately July to allow the plant to harden for the winter. Mulch the plants to help them retain moisture. Hostas usually bloom in the middle of the summer. Remove dead stalks when the plant has finished flowering for the season. Hostas need four to eight years to mature to their maximum size. In the spring, when new branches grow, divide any congested clusters to propagate your plants.

Hostas come in a variety of colors, including deep green, gentle sky blue, and blended white and green. Some are only six inches tall, while others may grow to be four feet tall!
