The best organic radishes for your garden
Hopefully, the first radish you bit into was straight out of the garden, because store-bought radishes just don't compare to homegrown. These tiny root vegetables are so sensitive to the environment they grow in that they take on the specific taste profiles depending on how warm the temperature got, how much water they received, and how many days they spent in the dirt.
Types of organic radishes
An easy-to-grow, cool-season root crop that comes in a variety of colors and flavors, organic radishes are one of the fastest-maturing crops in the garden. Depending on the variety, you may be harvesting radishes in as little as three weeks from sowing. Organic radishes are generally one of two types. Spring radishes, like Cherry Belle, grow quickly and need to be harvested often, but winter radishes like Japenese Minowase Daikon grow more slowly and can be left in the ground a little longer. Either way, you really can’t overdo it with radishes in your garden—these beauties tuck in almost anywhere, and you’re guaranteed to find a home for them all.
How to plant organic radishes
Organic radishes do best when direct sown in the garden. Multi-sow the seeds in straight rows or use a walk-behind seeder, but be sure to cover the seeds with a half-inch of soil and water them in. Keep ahead of the weeds and a watchful eye out for pests and you’ll have an abundance of radishes to enjoy. Eat them raw, chopped in salads, or roasted in the oven—there’s hardly a more versatile root vegetable than the humble radish. Be sure to buy extra organic radish seed and sow a fresh planting every 10 days for a continuous harvest!
Organic radishes are good for you!
Rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C, radishes contain compounds that work to lower blood sugar, detox the liver, and improve blood circulation and cardiovascular health. With all these health benefits, radishes have become a popular vegetable grown for microgreens. Organic radishes aren’t just good for you—they’re also the perfect companion crop for other garden vegetables, including carrots and parsnips. Radish root bulbs loosen the soil up as they grow and are ready to be harvested around the same time that other root groups need more space to grow. Many farmers even use radishes as a fall cover crop for this same reason.
Whether you need spring radishes for salads or fall radishes for a cover crop (or a mix of both for year-round microgreen harvests), Eden Brothers has you covered. Buy by the packet, pound, or in bulk! For large-scale plantings, contact us for wholesale prices.
